What are the major lakes located in Delhi?

The beautiful views of the lakes, which are home to many flora and fauna, give a good impression to the mind. There are many small and large lakes in and around Delhi.

1. Surajkund Lake

Surajkund is a 10th-century ancient reservoir located in the city of Faridabad in the state of Haryana, at a distance of 8 km from South Delhi. Surajkund is an artificial lake. The reservoir is built in the shape of the rising sun with an arc to the east. is enclosed within a steep embankment made in a semi-circular shape made of stepping stones. Rainfall was intercepted here to create a reservoir of 130 m diameter to meet the water shortage in Delhi. It has an area of 40 hectares. The reservoir is filled up during every monsoon season but remains dry during summer, before the onset of the monsoon rains. The tank underwent major repairs in the 1920s during British times. 


Surajkund lake

It is an important biodiversity area within the Northern Aravalli leopard wildlife corridor stretching from Sariska Tiger Reserve to Delhi. Surajkund falls inside the leopard habitat. Surajkund is located near the Surajkund village between the villages of Badarpur and Lakkarpur in the Faridabad district of Haryana. It is 8 kilometers by road from South Delhi and 20 kilometers from the heart of New Delhi city. It is well connected to all parts of the city. The Surajkund International Craft Mela attracts millions of local, national, and international tourists to visit the fair and showcase their love and admiration for art and craft. 


How to Reach 

The nearest airport is the Indira Gandhi International Airport, 25 km away.
The nearest railway stations are the New Delhi Railway Station and the Nizamuddin Railway Station, 22 kilometers and 21 kilometers respectively by road. It is also approached by road and rail from Faridabad and Gurgaon cities.


2. Naini Lake - Model Town

Naini Lake is surrounded by towering residential buildings and beautiful palm trees, Naini Lake is rather small in size but quite well maintained. It is often visited by residents of Model Town, Tagore Park, and Mukherjee Nagar.This lake is surrounded by sidewalks. You can spend your free time engaging in an active cycling session with your friends or taking a refreshing walk. Demonstrating a serene atmosphere, this hidden lake provides an ideal place for those who want to escape the chaos of the city. 

Naini lake

The opening and closing times of the lake change according to the summer and winter seasons. From April to September, the boating facilities are functional from 1 - 8 PM. From October to March, they operate between 11 AM to 6 PM.

The best way to reach the lake is from the Model Town Metro Station. It's only a few minutes' walks eastwards from there along the Ramprasad Bismil Road.

3. Sanjay Lake

Sanjay Lake is a beautiful lake in Delhi. The Lake is an artificial lake developed by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in Trilokpuri in East Delhi. Sanjay lake park is surrounded by the residential colonies of Kalyanpuri and Trilokpuri on the eastern side and Mayur Vihar on the Western side. The lake attracts some migratory birds and has many indigenous trees. Different types of birds can be seen here till February end every year. According to  Bird watchers, the lake hosts 90 varieties of birds. The migratory birds mostly come to the eastern part of the lake, as the water is deeper and the area is free from human disturbances. 

Sanjay lake


The lake is Spread over an area of approximately 17 hectares (42 acres) in the middle of a 69 hectares (170 acres) forest area, also known as Sanjay Lake Park. Sanjay Lake was developed in the 1970s by Delhi Development Authority and opened in 1982. It is one of the longest parks in East Delhi locations. Sanjay Lake is an artificial lake that is dependent on sewer and rainwater. There is also a Sanjay Jheel, within the Sanjay Van (Sanjay Forest) part of the South Delhi ridge, adjacent to Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj, Delhi. 

One of the main attractions is Adventure Park. It was inaugurated on 16 December 2015 by then Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia. The park has been set up by Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation in association with Delhi Development Authority (DDA) under PPP mode. It is claimed that the adventure park was developed on a Wild West theme. It is made of natural materials such as wood, jute rope, and hut-like structures. 

It has nine lawns - Great Plain, Battle Ground, Home Dome, The Dane, Grazing Field, Bad Lands, Cattle Ranch, Cowboy Creek, Man-made Beach. This place is more beautiful. You can do boating there, running, open gym, slides for kids, a small amusement park is also there, people do fishing too. Visiting time 6 am to 6 pm.

4. Hauz Khas Tank Delhi 

The Haus Khas Complex in Haus Khas, South Delhi, has a water tank, an Islamic seminary, a mosque, a tomb, and pavilions. The large water tank or reservoir was first built by Khilji to supply water to the inhabitants of Siri. The tank was de-silted during the reign of Firuz Shah Tughlaq (1351–88).  DDA. In 2004, with the efforts of INTACH or the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, rainwater from the southern hemisphere of Delhi was diverted to the lake.

Haus Khas tank

Rich with lush greenery and landscape beauty, this is a long list of peacocks, guinea pigs, rabbits, deer, and a variety of birds, animals, and insects that adorn the gardens. Best time to visit South Delhi’s Hauz Khas is from the month between October to March. The fort opens seven days a week from 10.30 is to 7.00 pm. No entry fees for the entrance to Haus Khas Village.

The nearest bus station to the Hauz Khas Fort is the ISTM bus station.

The nearest metro stations are Green Park and Hauz Khas, on the yellow line of Delhi Metro. Hauz Khas Metro Station is just 1.6 km away from the Hauz Khas fort.

5. Bhalswa Horseshoe Lake

Bhalswa Horseshoe Lake is located in northwest Delhi. It was originally shaped like a horseshoe. This halwa lake is very good and here people come to visit here is also very good weather. People come here for a morning walk in the morning. On the west side of the lake on the landfill-reclaimed land stands a housing colony. To the east is a few acres of orchards of acacia, bougainvillea, and keeker trees, which provide some habitat for the local wildlife. This lake offers facilities for boating in pedal boats, kayaks, canoes, and speed boats. Keen anglers can also indulge in fishing.

Hovercraft and water scooters have been introduced for the first time in Delhi at this lake. This cavalry lake was formed when the nearby Yamuna River changed its course and left a winding curve, flowing through lakes and dams that were more defined and fortified to protect modern Delhi from floods. 


6. Najafgarh Lake

Najafgarh Lake or Najafgarh Marsh lake is located southwest of Delhi near the town of Najafgarh. It was connected to the river Yamuna by a natural shallow nullah or drain called the Najafgarh nullah. Before entering the main city, including the former Najafgarh Lake or the Najafgarh Jill area, the unpolluted Najafgarh Drain wetland habitat and wildlife habitat of rural Delhi is an important habitat for migratory waterfowl and local wildlife. A bird sanctuary in Delhi. The winter months are the best and the continuation of the Sahibi River and the arrival of flocks of winter waterfowl. 



Najafgarh Wildlife Sanctuary also uses water for irrigation and supports aquatic flora and fauna, including birds and fish. The BSF colonies use quality water from the Najafgarh drain for drinking. Najafgarh Drain Bird Sanctuary is famous for its variety of birds. There are many trees around the Najafgarh drain, which makes it a dense forest. 2008 Delhi Government also planted about 12000 trees which make this area comfortable to living to birds.

7. Wazirabad barrage

The Wazirabad barrage was built across the Yamuna River, in north Delhi. the Wazirabad barrage is under the management of the Delhi govt. On the right is a 1,491-foot-long barrage with 6 under-sluices of 60 feet each and a 17-base spillway 58 feet each. The top of the spillway is 4 ft. There is a concrete floor flexible apron, both upstream and downstream. This barrage on the Yamuna is part of National Waterway NW110, one of India's 111 National Waterways. The barrage lies on the Delhi-Faridabad Yamuna waterway, from Wazirabad barrage in north Delhi to Palla barrage in north Faridabad via ITO barrage and Okhla barrage. 



8. Bharadwaj Lake Asola

Bharadwaj Lake is located in the Delhi - Hariyana border near Faridabad. This lake is situated in the middle of the Aravalli mountain range. Bharadwaj Lake was formed as a result of the uncontrollable mining of sandstone, lime, and Badarpur sand. This lake is a good picnic spot. Where people go trekking and hiking. The Asola Wildlife Sanctuary is located close by. In this area, visitors can see many flora and fauna. Among the rocks of Aravalli Hill, visitors can see many flora and fauna such as birds, butterflies, rabbits, deer, and nilgai. Local people say that wild animals also live in this area, although they are rarely seen. 

Bharadwaj Lake


The total distance of the Bharadwaj Lake trek is around 8 km. It takes about 3 - 4 hours to cover this distance.

How to Reach

The nearest metro station to Bharadwaj Lake is the Badarpur border violet line. From here the distance between the lake and the Asola wildlife sanctuary is 12 km. After coming to the metro station you can go to the lake by cab or autorickshaw.
