Waterfalls in Palakkad District

Palakkad district has many majestic and beautiful waterfalls. There are many waterfalls here, both large and small. Many visitors come here to see the scenic beauty of the falls. What are the major waterfalls in the Palakkad district?

 1. Seetharkundu waterfalls

Seetharkundu Falls is located in Nelliampathi in the Palakkad district. Seetharkund Falls is located on the Nelliampathi View Point, which attracts a large number of tourists. The waterfall, which originates from the Nelliampathi Hills, is a spectacular sight. The various views of the Palakkad Ghats can be seen from here in a single frame.


Many people come here to see this waterfall, including during the holidays. It is said that Goddess Sita came here with Ramalakshman during her exile and then Rama showed her a nearby stream to bathe in and bathed in that stream. Later, this stream came to be known as Seethayarkund, the theertham that bathed in the river, Sita Devi. So there are a lot of people who come here and take a bath. The elevation of these mountains is about 500 m to 1572 m above sea level.

To reach Nelliampathi, take the road from Nemmara via Pothundi Dam for about 10 hairpin bends to reach the top. From here, one can see the Chulliyar and Meenkara dams and the town of Kollamkode in the distance.



Seetharkundu waterfalls



As you climb the Ghat to Nelliyampathi, you will be mesmerized by the spectacular feast of Palakkad plains, paddy fields, and coconut groves below. Nelliyampathi is also famous for its orange groves. Along with Seetharkund Falls, one can also enjoy the scenic beauty of the place by jeep or walk from Palakapandi to Mampara. Near Palakapandi, there are tea, cardamom, and coffee plantations and mixed natural forests. The place is home to wild buffalo, elephants, leopards and mountain squirrel.



2. Dhoni Waterfalls

Dhoni Falls located in the hilly village of Dhoni, 15 km from Palakkad town. The place is famous for its Western Ghats forests. An entry pass is mandatory here. The entry fee is Rs 100 per person. After entering the pass area, one has to walk four kilometers up the foothills to reach the falls. The water flowing through the rocks, the unique beauty of the forest, the variety of birds and birds, the cool breeze and the scenic beauty of the place make it a perfect place to walk. This is a not so famous waterfall. This is a great place to go for those who are interested in trekking. The trekking trail is located at the top of Dhoni Hill. 


The waterfall reaches its peak during the months of September to October. An old bungalow can also be seen near the waterfall. This bungalow was built by the British in the 1850s to oversee the orange and cardamom cultivation in the area. When Dhoni goes to see the waterfall, he has to carry food and water with him. When you go to see Dhoni Falls, you should take food and water with you. As it is a rural area, there are few shops.

 3. Meenvallam Waterfall

Meenvallam Falls is located in the Karimba Grama Panchayat, 22 km from Palakkad in Kerala. It is a continuation of four waterfalls in total. All these waterfalls are located on the Thuppanad River, one of the tributaries of the Thoothupuzha, the tributary of the Bharathapuzha. About 2 km trekking is required to reach the fall which includes crossing the Thuppanad River. The height of the waterfall ranges from 100 - 125 feet at each level. 


The Meenvallam Small Hydro Project, which is under the control of the Kerala State Electricity Department, utilizes the Meenvallam Falls. Meenvallam was one of the first sites selected for the construction of small-scale irrigation projects following the Chinese model. Meenvallam Waterfall is a magnificent 5 step waterfall hidden amidst the lush forests of Western Ghats. Only two of the five steps of the falls are accessible. The waterfall passes through Kalladikode Hills.

This place is about 8 km from Thuppanad Junction on the Palakkad - Mannarkkad route. Thuppanad Junction is connected by frequent buses from Palakkad. Eight kilometers east of Kalladikode Thuppanad Junction on the Kozhikode-Palakkad National Highway, you can reach Munnekar and Meenvallam by crossing the sides of the Irrigation Canal which is part of the Kanjirapuzha Irrigation Project. Currently, the only access to the falls is by private vehicles. At a distance of 30 km from Palakkad  and 77 km from Coimbatore. 

The best time to visit this attraction is after monsoons, in October when the weather is more attractive. Timings: 9 AM - 5 PM. There is an entry fee to enter to see the falls.


4. Kuruthichal Waterfalls

Kuruthichal waterfalls is a famous waterfall located in the Mannarkkad Silent Valley Forest Reserve in Palakkad District. Many people come here to see this beautiful waterfall and take a dip in one of them. This waterfall is located at Pathrakkadavu Kuruthichal. The main attraction of Kuruthichal is the rocks and water. But there are many dangers lurking here. 


The water rushes in unexpectedly. It is then impossible to survive among the rounded smooth boulders. The first human touch to the Kunthipuzha is in this area known as Kuruthichal. As it is located in the buffer zone, no development projects have taken place here. Therefore, the uniqueness of nature can be enjoyed in the same way. This water is characterized by extreme cold. More people come here to bathe in the jungle to protect themselves from the heat. 


It travels through the catchment areas of the Western Ghats without being exposed to pesticides. Located in the Silent Valley Forest Reserve, the reservoir flows through the Patrakkadavu Falls.


Kuruthichal waterfalls


 

During the monsoon season, the rushing water hits both sides and flows in a rough manner. It is more beautiful in the rainy season. This is the most dangerous area if not kept. The water level in Kuruthichal is generally low during summers. This rocky area is very dangerous during the monsoons. 

There are a lot of whirlpools and cliffs. If not taken care of, the legs will get stuck. Going too high above this waterfall is also dangerous,There may be wildlife. Elephants, tigers and other wildlife, including leopards come here to quench their thirst. Attempts to enter prohibited forest areas are punishable under the Forest and Environment Act.  

Before reaching Mannarkkad town, you have to enter a small road from the junction of 'Kallyanakappu'. Kuruthichal can be reached by a short walk from the Mylampadam inland junction. You have to park your car on the road and take a short detour from here. To reach here, one has to walk through the rubber trees that grow on both sides. 


5. Shiruvani Waterfalls

Shiruvani Falls  located at a distance of about 40 km from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and 50 km from the city of Palakkad. Shiruvani is located close to Attappadi and Anakkatty on the border of Palakkad district. Although Shiruvani is located in the Palakkad district, it is located in the adjoining state of Tamil Nadu. This waterfall is also known as Kovai Kutralam. 

The waterfall can be reached by trekking through the jungle for about 3-4 km. No one will be allowed in after 5 p.m. It is located in the center part of a dense forest. Private vehicles are not allowed beyond this point. However, vehicles arranged by the forest department can be used for the conveyance to the point where the trek is to be started. 


Shiruvani falls


The best time to visit this place is in the monsoon season between June and October. Visiting hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry fee Rs. 50 for Person. 


6. Attila Waterfalls

Attila waterfall is located in Karimba Panchayath in the Palakkad district. This waterfall originates from the Karimala in Kalladikode. Muthukulangara is located on the top of this hill. There are many legends surrounding the Muthukulangara and Kalladikode hills. After the journey along the main road, the journey continues through the concrete. There is also a good climb, which is essential. There are rubber plantations on both sides of the road. On the way, you will see a 200-year-old mango tree. 

The roads here are frequented by elephants. This is an ideal destination for off-road lovers. You have to walk through the dense forest to reach the waterfall. Along the way, you can see many other small streams and waterfalls. Jeeps and 2 wheelers will go for some distance and then walk there.



Attila falls



The area is rich in wildlife presence. You have to climb a lot of bamboo forests to reach this waterfall. It is an ideal destination for trekking and hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Try to go here only with the permission of the forest department. Mineral wax, a rare medicine, is said to be abundant here. You can not stand near the waterfall because the water is falling so strongly. 


During the monsoon season, the flow of water is very high. In summer, the flow of water decreases. Do not try to get into the water as it will invite too much danger. During these times you can go down to the waterfall and get a closer look. The rocks are slippery and be careful. 

It is said that it is a good beauty to see the forest on full moon nights. If you want to know the touch of nature, you have to come here. The scenery here is so beautiful. Attila Falls is a hidden waterfall in dense forests.
