Khor Fakkan is a city of the Emirate of Sharjah, located on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates, along the Gulf of Oman. Surrounded by the Emirates of Fujairah. Khor Fakkan is also the second-largest coastal city present on UAE’s eastern coast only after Fujairah. It is one of the major tourist attractions in the emirate of Sharjah. It is also a popular spot among domestic tourists due to its white sand beaches and coral reefs that attract many marine life enthusiasts. Khor Fakkan is located on the east coast of the UAE, between the Shumailia Mountains and the Arabian Sea, at an altitude of 1,023 m on Mount Al Hilkha. 

It is the site of the Khor Fakkan Container Terminal, the only natural deep sea port in the region and one of the major container ports in the UAE. The city is geographically surrounded by the Hajar Mountains at its western end. Khorfakkan is popular for its spas, beaches, watersports activities and fishing. The rugged Hajar Mountains and rock formations provide the perfect backdrop for this beautiful place. A new amphitheater and an artificial waterfall were added to the destination, both of which proved to be very popular with tourists. 

Things to do in Khor Fakkan

1. Khor Fakkan Beach 

Khor Fakkan Beach is situated on the northeastern end of the city. There is a thriving coral reef on Khor Fakkan beach, which is a testament to the government's conservation efforts. This is a favorite destination of marine life lovers.  In the backdrop of the Khorfakkan Beach are the rocky Hajar Mountains which look beautiful and rustic. This Crescent Beach is famous for its beautiful sunrises and sunsets across the sea. 2.Khorfakkan Amphitheatre

The Amphitheater is located at the foot of Mount Al Sayyid, near Khor Fakkan Beach, facing the Khor Fakkan Beach. The complex nature of the architecture is awe-inspiring. The architecture was inspired by the Romans. Semi-circular structure features a stone facade with 295 columns and 234 arches. The 1,700m2 arena can accommodate an audience of over 3,500. The Roman Colosseum inspired the open-air venue’s stunning design.  The Khor Fakkan Amphitheater has state-of-the-art temperature control facilities.  An AV system and outdoor air conditioning have also been installed to ensure that visitors are comfortable even during the peak summer months.

Khorfakkan Amphitheatre was inaugurated by His Highness Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah in 2020.Different artists captivated the audience with their performances on this magnificent stage. Famous singers and artists such as Majid Al Mahndas, Dalia Mubarak, Balkis, Faisal Al Sayeed and Walid Al Jazeem have performed here as part of the UAE National Day celebrations and other events.

3. Waterfall

The man-made waterfall is located on a natural cliff that overlooks the Khorfakkan Corniche. The waterfall is 43 metres above sea level, 45 metres long and 11 metres wide. The Khorfakkan Waterfall was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. There are multiple openings where visitors can see the water slope at the bottom of the mountain through the top of the cave. From the top aperture, you can enjoy panoramic views of Khor fakkan Beach. 


4. Al Rafisah Dam

Al Rafisah Dam is a popular tourist destination in Khor fakkan. Al Rafiza Dam is famous for its attractive and dazzling beauty. The dam was built in the 1980s. Situated amidst the Hajj Mountains, this man-made lake is regularly visited by a variety of migratory birds. Al Rafisah Dam Rest Area along the lake offers plenty of facilities for visitors to enjoy the beauty of the lake. The dam holds the seasonal waterway of Wadi Shie, which has remnants of ancient settlements. The area is rich in native flora and fauna and is home to problematic and invasive species such as tilapia and red-eared slider turtles, including the Little Grebe and other migratory-winter birds.

It is an archaeological site that attracts history lovers from around the region to visit Sharjah and Fujairah. Kayaking and paddle boat riding are some of the most enjoyable activities at the dam, for which you have covered the Al Khor Kayak service. 5. Shark Island Sharjah 



Shark Island can be reached by boat from Khor Fakkan on the east coast of Sharjah. Shark Island is one of the most popular destinations for swimming and sunbathing. There are shacks on the beach where you can rent snorkels, fins, and masks. Local dive centers can organize day trips and equipment rental for scuba divers. It is also a beautiful place for a beach picnic. The Island is an ideal location for you to give a hand at activities such as snorkelling, windsurfing, jet skiing, boat cruising and deep sea diving with your friends and family. 

6. Al Rabi Hiking Trail 

The tower is a historical monument built in 1915 as part of a defense network for Khorfakkan. The location provides a breathtaking view of Khor Fakkan city on one side and the majestic Gulf of Oman on the other. It takes about 3 hours to reach the peak and at an elevation of 2,650 m. Khorfakkan city holds hundreds of years of history as a prosperous port and was once attacked by the Portuguese. This is one of the UAE’s most popular spots for hiking and camping. The best time to do the hike is before sunrise. This trail is often referred to as a beginner’s climb, however, so be sure to take plenty of water and snacks and wear shoes suitable for cliffs.  

7. Wadi Shees park 

Shees Park in Khor Fakkan is located between the Hajar Mountains for both UAE residents and visitors to enjoy, Inaugurated in October 2020. The park is situated near Wadi Shees in Khor Fakkan, on the outskirts of Sharjah. Shees Park is spread across a massive area of 11,362 square metres.

One of the best things to do in Shees Park is to see the 25 meter high waterfall. This man-made waterfall that falls into the beautiful lake is a beautiful addition to the park and also creates some stunning pictures. 

Shees Park in Khor Fakkan has 506 meters of mountain trails and access trails for visitors. There are three level mountain terraces that lead to the main viewing deck, from where you can enjoy stunning views of the park and surrounding areas. Shees Park has a designated barbecue area, However, barbecue pits are limited and can be very busy on weekends. The park also has shaded seats for families and friends to enjoy a fun outdoor picnic. There is a restaurant at Shees Park where you can grab coffee, croissants and quick snacks. Shaded seats surround a large playground for the little ones, and the kids will love the swings, slides and seashores at Shees Park.

There is also an open air amphitheater that can accommodate up to 70 people, so expect some interesting shows in the park in the future.  The sheese Park features beautiful lawns and landscaping, making it an ideal place for relaxing walks after enjoying a fun picnic during the colder months. 

If you visit the park, please note that barbecue is only allowed in designated areas. Other activities such as camping, football, shisha, horseback riding, hunting and swimming are not allowed in the park. 8. Heart beach 



Heart Beach has wider, better and cleaner waters. There are also some kayaks, water activities and some recreation areas. The beach is beautiful in the evening. Pets are allowed since it's an open beach. There is also an area with cliffs that opens into a small cave that is absolutely stunning. There you can take a lot of photos. The beach is accessible via an offroad route or via a hiking trail. 

9. Wadi Wurayah Biosphere Reserve 

Wadi Wurayah  is a 12,700 - hectare wadi between the towns of Masafi, Khor Fakkan, and Bidiyah in the United Arab Emirates.On March 16, 2009, Wadi Wura became the first protected mountain range in the United Arab Emirates after a three - year campaign by the Emirates Wildlife Society in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature, backed by HSBC Bank Middle East Limited. Wadi Wurayah is home to more than 100 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as more than 300 species of plants. 



It is famous for its beautiful waterfalls located amidst the Hajar Mountains. There are streams and ponds around the rocks. It is one of the few remaining places in the world where the endangered Arabian Tahar still roams freely. Of the 208 species of plants, this area has a unique species of wild orchid, Epipactis veratrifolia. In 2018, an Indian hedgehog was spotted here. The wadi is also home to the Garra barreimiae, a type of freshwater fish that lives only in Al Hajar Mountains. 

Over the past three years we have revealed the presence of 12 species of mammals, 73 species of birds, 17 species of reptiles and amphibians, one species of fish and 74 invertebrate families, of which 11 new species for science,'' said Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director EWS-WWF. “More than 300 species of plants have been recorded in the area, including species that are found only in wetlands such as Typha dominginsis and the unique orchid species of UAE,  Epipactis veratrifolia.''

10. Al Suhub Rest Area 

Al Suhub Rest House is almost 600 metres above sea level. The mountaintop “cloud lounge” at the Rest House provides the perfect vantage point to soak in the scenic views. The circular structure is unique, with a diameter of 30 metres. The building’s design resembles a flying saucer. The rest house has two floors covering an area of ​​2,788 square meters. Downstairs there is a cafe and a restaurant that can accommodate more than 130 guests. There is a multi-purpose hall and separate prayer rooms for men and women.

The Al Suhub Rest Area has fountains and vast green spaces with over 8,000 trees. Visitors can relax under the thick shade and enjoy a good time with family. Children can spend time in a separate playground.You can reach the Al Rafiza Dam from the Al Suhub Rest Area by following a 3-kilometer path. 11. Salem Al Mutawa Mosque



The mosque showcases unique Arabic style architecture and interiors, making it a tourist spot for the visitors. Built around 200 Years ago. The Salem Al Mutawa Mosque is a must visit in the evenings as the view of the mosque illuminated by different colored lights is truly breathtaking. 

12. Portuguese Fort



The Fort was built in 1635 AD by the Portuguese Captain Gaspar Leite, and the ruins of a three-sided fort located near Khor Fakkan Beach are another hotspot. Signboards depicting the architecture and history of the fort can be seen, giving a detailed insight into the historical events witnessed by the fort and the city of Khor Fakkan. 

13. Al Metalaa Park 

Al Metalaa Park is located between the sands of the desert and the cliffs of the Western Hajar Mountains. This Park which is entitled with lush green gardens and grassy lawns. Al Metalaa Park has lots of swings and rides for kids to enjoy, making it an ideal place to visit if you are traveling with children. Al Metalaa Park is also a home for some birds. This Park is located opposite Khor Fakkan Beach which is another favorite spot among local and tourist from different parts of UAE. It is an excellent place for family outing in great refreshing natural environment. 



From October to February is the best time to visit Khor Fakkan as you can find perfect blue water, blue sky, and cooler weather.May to August is very hot with the temperature reaching 40 deg Celsius and more. Nights during these months are also warm and humid.

How to Reach Khor Fakkan

At a distance of 125 km from Sharjah and 141 km from Dubai, Khor Fakkan. The city of Khor Fakkan is located 135 km east of Sharjah, and the only way to get here from Sharjah is by private car or taxi. To do this, you need to take Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Road to Maliha Road / Route S116.
