Emirate's Foremost Museum- Ajman National Museum

The Ajman Museum is located in the city of Ajman, United Arab Emirates. It is one of the popular museums in UAE. Established in the year 1981. The Museum includes several sections that offer a compelling glimpse of Ajman's past, including archaeology, manuscripts, folk costumes, souvenirs, and more. The museum houses ancient manuscripts, ancient irrigation systems and wooden dhows. One of the most notable exhibits is the excavated cemetery in the area of ​​Al Muwaihat, which contains pottery and burial ornaments dating back to 3000 BC.  

Ajman Museum

The museum tells about the local history and heritage, the place highlights various aspects of the past. The fort was built during the late 18th century and was also the first line of defence of Ajman. The fort served as the residence of Ajman's then-ruler, the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi and his family until 1970. Later, it was used as the emirate's police headquarters until 1978 and converted into a museum in 1981.


The fort is adorned with some unique features including its grand gateway protected by two cannons, two watchtowers, and two wind towers. The museum displays are annotated in both Arabic and English. There are also displays of documents, photos, and official manuscripts tracing Ajman's founding as an emirate. 

What to see in the Ajman Museum 

The museum is home to all sorts of ancient artifacts that can be traced back to what life was like in the emirate in the past. This includes pottery, jewelry, pearls, and fishing gear. These are the main attractions of the Ajman Museum.

One of the most impressive displays is that of an excavated cemetery that features pottery and funeral jewellery from as old as 3000 BC. The cemetery was discovered in the Al Mowaihat area. This site is the emirate’s earliest human settlement. The area is still an active residential community. 

Fishing 

As fishing is important in old Ajman, a whole section dedicated to pearl fishing is on display in the museum. Fishing is one of the best things that locals and tourists can do in Ajman. Keep in mind that you will need a special fishing license as the UAE authorities are very strict on the protection of marine life. On the other hand, tourists can opt for deep sea fishing trips offered by licensed vendors in Ajman. 

There are several other replicas of traditional life located around the museum. There’s also display where can you see a mannequin of a barber with bloodstains from his customers’ head. visitors can also check out black and white Ajman Museum pictures from the early 20th century. 

Going forward, there are rooms in museums showcasing various archeological finds in Ajman.  You will find rooms with the remains of the Ajman Police Force and the first radio station in the emirate.The fort itself is a perfect example of traditional Emirati architecture, while a section dedicated to the pearl trade that once dominated the area.

How to Reach 

The museum is located in the city centre towards the east of the central square in the Al Bustan area.The Ajman Museum location is also close to the Corniche. Those travelling from Dubai can reach within an hour if they are driving via Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. you can easily reach the Ajman Museum by bus.
