Nature’s hidden gem – Bimmah Sinkhole, where the sky meets the water!

Bimmah Sinkhole, also known as Hawiyat Najm, is a breathtaking natural wonder in Oman, located in the Al Sharqiyah region, approximately 120 km southeast of Muscat along the scenic Muscat-Sur coastal road. This stunning geological formation is a large limestone depression filled with crystal-clear turquoise water, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. According to local folklore, the sinkhole was created by a meteorite impact, which is why it is called "Hawiyat Najm," meaning "The Falling Star" in Arabic. However, geologists explain that it was formed due to natural erosion and the collapse of underground limestone layers caused by the dissolution of rock over time.

The sinkhole measures about 50 meters in diameter and 20 meters in depth, with an inviting pool of water at the bottom that varies in shades of blue and green due to its mix of seawater and freshwater. The site is located within Hawiyat Najm Park, a well-maintained area with shaded seating, walking paths, and staircases leading down to the water, making access easy and comfortable for visitors. Many people visit Bimmah Sinkhole for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxation, as the water is cool and refreshing, especially during Oman's hot summer months. The small fish in the sinkhole also provide a natural fish spa experience, nibbling at the feet of those who enter the water.

Surrounded by rocky terrain and desert landscapes, Bimmah Sinkhole contrasts beautifully with its vibrant blue waters, making it a photographer’s paradise. The park surrounding it adds to the experience, with its green spaces, picnic areas, and scenic views of the coastline. Since the sinkhole is easily accessible by car and has ample parking facilities, it is a convenient stop for travelers exploring the nearby Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi.

Bimmah Sinkhole is more than just a natural swimming spot—it is a place where visitors can witness Oman's unique geological beauty, relax in nature, and experience the charm of local legends. Whether you're looking for a quick stopover on a road trip or a serene place to unwind, this natural wonder offers a refreshing and unforgettable experience.

The best time to visit is during the early morning or late afternoon when the sun’s reflection enhances the sinkhole's mesmerizing colors and provides a more pleasant temperature.
