 Mattupetty Dam

Mattupetty Dam is located in the village of Chithirapuram in Mattupetty, Devikulam taluk, Idukki district, Kerala. The dam is built on the Muthirapuzha river, a tributary of the Periyar. It is a concrete gravity dam built for power generation. The height of the dam is 83.35 meters and the length is 237.74 meters. The dam was built in 1954. A valve has been installed at the bottom to drain the sludge from the dam. It is the first concrete gravity dam in india. In 1998 a small project called Mattupetty power Station with a turbine of Two Megawatts was launched below the dam. The annual production here is 6.4 MU. Due to its proximity to Munnar, the mattupetty dam attracts a large number of tourists. Mattupetty dam is located at a distance of about 13 km from Munnar. Mattupetty is located on the Vattavada route from Munnar. The people here speak malayalam mixed with tamil.

Mattupetty dam is an important tourist destination in munnar. During the boating trip , we can see the beauty of the Shola forest and the herds of elephants going down to the dam for drinking water, wild buffalo walking alone and in groups, herds of deer, and wide variety of Fish and birds. Boat service is available from 9 am to 5 pm.

Two or three years ago, when the summer was hot , the old ruins of the arid dam were a major tourist attraction. The ruins of the mattupetty Mariamman temple built in the 18th century in Munnar, the bungalows of the British, the labour camps and the mattupetty market have all been cleared. The wreckage of the Munnar kundala valley monorail, which was destroyed in the 1924 floods, has also been unearthed. Tourists flock to see the centuries- old ruins built of limestone. After the completion of the dam in 1953,  the workers of the British companies who lived in there buildings moved to kundala and kuttiyar. There is a livestock center here under the mattupetty indo- swiss project about 100 species of cattles can be seen in the farm. Mattuppetty has all the sights for a day like kundala dam, Ecopoint,yellapetty, tea gardens, top station, kurinjimala and Pampadum Shola National park. Tea powder can be purchased at a discounted price.
